You can´t go any further west i Norway than here.
Take a trip out to Utvær in Solund, Norway´s westernmost island. You´ll be overwhelmed by the mighty open sea. And, safe in harbour, you can let the idyllic peace of the old fishing station and lighthouse wash over you. It was here that the wikings sharpened their swords before they sailed off to sack and plunder! And don´t forget Bulandet, Norway´s westernmost active fishing community.
Bulandet in Askvoll is a cluster of islands, holms and skerries further out to sea than any others. The 250 inhabitants live mainly from fishing. In good weather, it´s idyllic and sheltered, and, when a storm is coming, the unrestrained violence is almost hypnotic.
Florø is the most westerly town in Norway. Today it is a charming and busy little community. It was founded in 1860 on account of the expanding herring fisheries. Many consider herring, «the silver of the seas», to be the main reason why the town was founded and is today found in the town’s coat of arms.
