From the sea to the mountain

The mountains stand tall and free along the coast of Sogn og Fjordane. Everything from steep challenges to leisurely coastal paths. All with sea views guaranteed.

From easy tracks on the islands and the lowlands to challenging mountain climbs on the very edge of Norway. Climb to the peak of Blegja in Askvoll, at 1.305 metres, Hornellen, the highest mountain cliff of Northern Europe, or Vestkapp – the most westerly point of mainland Norway. You can also go for a stroll along the beaches, where marine life, rounded rocks and the sound of the sea will soothe and relax you. These trips offer fabulous panoramic views of coast, inlets and the open sea. Most trails are well marked, and folders with maps and route descriptions are available at the local tourism offices and at many of the hotels. Another option is to join in on “Nordfjord Vandrefestival”, literally a “Festival of Walks” arranged in Nordfjord annually.

Mountain Hikes

The outer parts of Sunnfjord and Dalsfjord ogger over 100 different trails, from easy paths on the islands and the lowland to challenging mountain hikes, for example to Blegja in Askvoll at 1.305 metres. Trips to lower peaks, widely accessable throughout the region, offer fantastic panoramic views of the coastline, inlets and the open sea. To the south of our region Høyanger borders on Stølsheimen, one of the largest and most popular hiking areas in Norway. Most of the trails in our region are well marked, but for some of the more challenging hikes we would recommend using a map. Maps and route descriptions are available at the local tourism offices and at many of the hotels. (NOK 30 – 50, available in Norwegian, English and German)

 

Alden  in Askvoll

Alden is also known as “The Norwegian Horse” due to its particular shape which has led it to serve as a landmark for sea farers along the coast. Rising 481 metres straight up from the sea, it is visible over 100 kilometres away. Marked trail to its peak, access via ferry to Værlandet, continuing by boat from there to Alden.

 

Blegja  in Askvoll

This peak is a tyougher challenge, at 1305 metres, but the reward is an unbeatable view! You can see as far as Jostedal Glacier to the east and to Snønipa and the glacier of Ålfoten in the north. To the west your eye can follow the coastline from Sollund to Hornelen, and straight out to sea. This trip takes a full day.

 

Lihesten in Hyllestad

The majestic and mysterious mountain of Lihesten in Hyllestad is one of the most distinctive peaks along the coast. Several trails will lead you to the top at 714 metres, with views of the ocean and the fjords. On this mountain there are also several good fishing lakes.

 

Den Trondhjemske Postveg

His historic postal route between Bergen and Trondheim passes through Fjaler, Hyllestad and Gulen. The road was built between 1801 and 1806 and boasts several artesan stone bridges. A wonderful experience for walking or cycling on a moutain bike. Along the trail stop at Skor, where a beautiful and authentic site of 5 mills has been fully restored.

 

Stølsheimen in Høyanger

For those that want to experience the rich variations of the mountains of the west coast, a trip to Stølsheimen is recommended. This area of 367 m2 stretches from high mountain peaks through lush valleys to deep fjords under imposing cliffs. The area is also renowned for its many lakes and mountain farm cabins, “Støl”, from which this district takes its name. Trails are marked from Ortnevik, or you can drive along Stordalenvegen from Bjordal to the highest point at 725 metres, and start you trip from there.

 

Kystarboretet in Solund

In Hardbakke in Solund you will find Kystaboretet, an area in which 160 different species of mostly indigenous trees, flowers and hedges have been planted. The collection of Rhodedendrons is a spectacular sight in early summer. In connection with Kystaboretet a 5 km. Long trail has been marked, starting at the gardens and winding through varied landscape the the peak, Ravenipa, with great views of Sognesjøen.

 

Nordsjøløypa in Steinsundøy

The North Sea Trail in Solund starts as a trail from Bjørnefjorden to Stokkevåg. The trail  has just a slight inclination as it winds its way along the foot of the mountain, in a terrain of heather and slate stones. The triåp takes between 1 – 1,5 hours and makes a nice family outing. From the end of the trail your journey continues by rowboat through inlets, passing  Litle Færøy, Gullholmen, Råkeneset and Strand. Nordsjøløypa  in Korsund

Marked trail tht follows the local road in parts, but mostly goes along old paths towards Lammetun in the north. This trip starts at Korssund harbour, and stretches about 3 km. towards Lammetunsundet. You can book a boat to pick you up from there, taking you back to your starting point on a half-hour journey through narrow straits.  Book the return boat in the local shop before starting your hike. The local shop also has a folder describing details of this trip. The price for the boat is NOK 50 for adults, 25 for children. The whole trip takes about 1,5 hours.

 

Fossedalen

This is the most popular hiking area on the north side of Dalsfjorden. Vikja and Kleivane are starting points for trips to Fossedalen, Heileberget, Kringla, Ertrefjellet and Blegja. There is a marknad trail to Nipebø and from there to Rivedal, Stongfjorden, Markavatnet and Massbu. (Laukeland). These areas are considered  very spcial, appreciated equally by adults and children. As you walk along the old farm trail you will discorer an exceptionally rich variety of plants, animals and birds. This area also has a rich cultural heritage, as reflected in the poetry of Jakob Sande.

 

The North Sea Trail – Færøy

This trail is marked from Henja on the west side and from the guest harbour of Vassdalen. Strolling along the gravelled road crossing the island you are more likely to come across grazing cattle than cars! The trail continues north, following paths and an old carriageway. At Espa, the turabout point of the trail, you can enjoy panoramic views of the islands of Alden, Værlandet and Bulandet, as well as the inland mountains.
 

The North Sea Trail – Værlandet – Bulandet

This trail is marked, starting at the main pier of Værlandet. Here you go west, crossing marshes and paths along the sea. This trail passes by the charecteristic hills of Klettane, and you  can make a detour to climb Høgekletten ( 163 metres high) The views from up there are fantastic! The trail is about 2,5 km, and joins the main road at the “Loran-C-mast” From there you can walk or cycle further west

 To Melvær and Bulandet, or return to the ferry pier on Værlandet. Brochures of this tour are available in the local shops, and it is also possible to rent bicycles there.
